Report of George Hardinge, on:
1. Jane Jones, convicted at the Great Sessions for Radnorshire at Presteigne, for breaking and entering a dwelling house and stealing property, value more than 5/-. The judge comments on the ragged and filthy condition of the prisoner in the court 'indecent & offending beyond measure'. He is critical of the sheriff and magistracy. Grounds for clemency: 'many circumstances in her favour'. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: 3 years solitary with hard labour.
2. Lewis John, convicted at the Spring Breconshire Great Sessions in 1788, for horse stealing. Grounds for clemency: deeply penitent and good conduct while in prison observing all religious duties, gaoler, chaplain and other clergy and magistrates attested to his complete reform and urge mercy. Initial sentence: death, commuted to 3 years solitary with hard labour. Recommendation: immediate discharge.
