Report of Richard Perrryn on 3 collective petitions (15 people, churchwardens and others of Spelsbury, and the vicar and others of Charlbury; 3 magistrates superintending the gaol where prisoner is held, and 24 people, including the mayor and magistrates of Oxford) on behalf of James Bowell, convicted at the 'last' Oxford Assizes, for a rape on Elizabeth Grafton. Evidences supplied by William Izard, prisoner's former landlord and Hester Lanchbury, prisoner's former neighbour. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, the alleged victim was of bad character and not virtuous as assumed by the judge, and he had acted well while in gaol. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: mercy.
Folios 38-49.
