Report of Beaumont Hotham 1 collective petition (16 people, including the mayor and 15 alderman of Norwich) on behalf of John Middleton Tworts, convicted at the City of Norwich Summer Assizes, in 1788, for stealing clothing and a pocket book, containing notes to the value of £80 and £5, property of Thomas Jessard, publican. Grounds for clemency: youth (17 years) no previous offence, driven by hunger, had no idea of the books value (sold it for 4d) and his mother will suffer by his sentence). Initial sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: none made.
