Description

Report of James Adair, Recorder of London, on Joseph Slack and John Hindley, convicted at the Old Bailey:

1. Slack, for grand larceny. Grounds for clemency: had a wife and 6 children, inadequate employment to provide for his family, very reputable witnesses called on his behalf, previous good character and Mr Bloxham, 'The Sheriff', gave a good character to the wife and claimed that if the prisoner was spared transportation he would be able to provide honestly for the family in future. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: 'a milder punishment'.

2. Hindley, apprentice to Samuel Edwards, for stealing 6 brass powder flask mounds, value 6/-, and 3 blankets, value 12/-, property of Samuel Edwards, Grays Inn Lane. Grounds for clemency: none given, the judge believes it would be better for him to be transported. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: no mercy.
