Report of Lord Loughborough on Christopher Theddle, convicted at the Essex[?] Assizes, for a burglary in the house of William Comyns. Grounds for clemency: previous good character provided by decent people, on being apprehended the prisoner had confessed and had 'discovered' his accomplices, no aggravating circumstances and the prosecutor was anxious to solicit a pardon. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: mercy; the judge comments that 'I am sorry to add that there will be no want of instances upon the present Circuit to demonstrate the rigour of the Law & perhaps of the judge'.
