Report of William Henry Ashhurst 1 collective petition (7 people, including the prisoner, prosecutor and Surrey magistrate) on behalf of Francis Pauley, breeches maker, convicted at the Surrey Lent Assizes at Kingston, for larceny. There is a covering letter from Henry Thornton. Grounds for clemency: first offence, had fallen into bad company, previous good character and assured employment by his former master if pardoned, crime was 'not attended with any very aggravating circumstances', the petitioners who guarantee the prisoners reformation are men of character, and there are 'Difficultys' in putting such sentence as he received into execution. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy.
