Report of Francis Buller on 1 collective petition (24 people, including the prisoner) on behalf of Samuel Jackson, butcher of Codnor in Heanor, convicted at the Derbyshire Lent Assizes in 1782, for stealing 1 sheep, property of Samuel Coultiffe, of Langley in Heanor. Evidence supplied by John Kirby, the Keeper of the Woodstreet Compter. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, was set up for the crime by another, has been prisoner for more than 5 years (in gaols at Derby, the Savoy and Woodstreet Compter), good behaviour whilst in prison and had assisted the gaol keeper there during several disturbances, there was 'nothing atrocious' about the crime, suffers bad health, his wife has now died and their 3 children must become totally destitute. Initial sentence: 5 years transportation to Africa. Recommendation: mercy.
