Report of James Eyre on 2 collective petitions (3 people, minister and churchwardens of St. James Bath, Somerset, and 83 people also of St. James) on behalf of Decima Chapple convicted at the 'last' Somerset Assizes at Taunton, for receiving from Thomas Frosser/Prosser (since executed), some stocks[?] and a pair of silk stockings, property ofJohn Coartney. Grounds for clemency: age (66 years), of simple mind and ignorant of the criminal content of her actions, previous good character, has always lived in the Parish of St James, Bath, and always known to be honest and inoffensive. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks against mercy and states that if mercy is extended it should not be a free pardon. Annotated, 'no alteration to the present sentence'.
