Report of Beaumont Hotham on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Thomas Barnsley, musician, convicted at the 'last' Berkshire Summer Assizes at Abingdon, for stealing a box of tea out of a waggon. The judge states that this type of crime is on the increase, that he has nothing to add to report made on the case several months ago and furthermore that given the convict's conduct at his trial and the evidence given against him he is 'a practiced London Thief'. Grounds for clemency: hints at his innocence (but prisoner declares that such claims are disregarded), his wife, elderly mother and younger members of his family that he previously supported will now will be reduced to penury. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation, currently on the Ceres at Woolwich. Recommendation: no mercy.
Folios 237-239.
