Eastern Europe: River Danube. 'Delta of the Danube': map of the coast between Lake Kunduk (now Lake Sasyk, Ukraine) and Lake Razelm (now in Romania), and inland as far as Braila (now in Romania). Scale: 1 inch to 4 nautical miles. Compass star. Drawn by C A Hartley; lithographed by Kell Brothers, Castle Street, Holborn. Inset: Black Sea, showing distances between its main ports; in the right margin are maps of the mouths of the rivers Kiliya, Sulina and St George's (now Sfantu Gheorghe); scale: 4.3 inches to 10 nautical miles [1:169,674]. MS additions, coloured, showing points where guns could be placed behind earthworks on the north bank, and access roads. Originally 'Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers', 1861-1862: volume XXI, plate 5; subsequently accompanied a minute from Colonel J Stokes, Royal Engineers, to Sir Lintorn Simmons, 12 November 1876.
