'Plan of the Harbours and Fortifications of Valetta In the island of Malta by Captain W.H. Smyth, R.N. ...': 4 copies of a map. Reference tables. Scale: 4 inches to 1,000 yards. Compass indicator. Engraved by J Walker; published at the Hydrographical Office, Admiralty, 19 July 1823. Insets: 3 views: 'The Castle of S. Angelo'; 'The Castle and Lighthouse of S. Elmo'; 'Appearance of Valetta bearing S.E. 13, or 14 miles'. MS additions, coloured, showing: (2-3) the proportion of water in the harbours allotted to each department under the agreement of 1851; (4) a proposed road across the ditch of Valetta, and naval, mercantile and quarantine waters, both for British and foreign ships; reference notes; (5) a proposed new distribution of waters. Items 2-3 signed: William Hoseason, Superintendent of the Ports. Originally illustrating: (2-3) Hoseason's report, 22 July 1858; (4-5) Sir J Gaspard le Marchant's [despatch] number 159, 13 April 1858.
