Description

3 items extracted from AIR 1/636/17/122/132. 3 sheets of elevations and sketches of parts of HMS Campania. (4) 'Fig 1': plan and elevation; 'Fig 2 View Looking in the direction of Arrows': showing the deck, funnels and platform, alterations to the flying rails, and a winch. (5) 'Fig 1 Elevation of Ship': showing the aft steering position, the aft well and the weather or strength deck as existing; 'Fig 2 Elevation Showing Seaplane Room': showing the engine room, the weather or strength deck, and an open space for seaplanes. (6) 'Fig 3 Elevation Showing Kite Balloon Hanger': showing the decks, the aft magazine and shell room, a new ammunition supply arrangement, the removal of aft steering position, holes cut in derricks, and light wood 'wireless' masts; 'End View Looking in direction of [arrow]': showing a hanger with a roller hatch cover and necessary supports. Scale: (4) 1 inch to 8 feet [1:96]; (5) and (6) 1 inch to about 16 feet. Dimensions: (4) 45 cm x 75.5 cm; (5) 50 cm x 70 cm; (6) 35.5 cm x 74 cm. (4) originally enclosed in a report from Wing Captain O Schwann [later Swann], HMS Campania, to the Director of Air Services, 29 October 1915, concerning a proposal to replace the forward funnel with two thinner ones. (5) and (6) originally enclosed in a letter from Schwann to the Commander in Chief, Grand Fleet, 9 November 1915, outlining his recommended changes and reasons for them.
