[Ferenc] Rákóczi [II of Hungary] to Marlborough: having learned of the favourable sentiments of the queen and the states general, he resolved to write to the Sieur de Leichtemberg, but he had not been wrong when he feared that Vienna intended to finish what it had started [with Hungary]. Austrian ill-treatment of surrendered officers and garrisons. He does not wish to have recourse to the enemies of christianity [Turkey], but may be forced to by the enmity of the house of Austria and the avarice of its ministers. Surely God has not blessed Marlborough's arms to make [Hungary] miserable? Comparisons with England under James II and the Netherlands under the Spanish. The deliverance [of Hungary] would be as much to Marlborough's credit as his other exploits. Dated at Houst. ff. 125-127
