'A. Strachan' to M. Desmares, controller general of finances at the court of Versailles: he has written to two senior French ministers offering them secret information about the allies, but has received no reply, perhaps because he asked for fifty pistoles to pay for a messenger. He has the means to secure the crown of Spain for King Philip. If he is sent a hundred pistoles he will go to Basel. He is secretary to the British ambassador in Vienna. For safety he is sending the letter via an actor in Strasbourg. Jacobite sentiments. He asks for any reply to be sent via Nuremberg and Breslau. Dated at Dresden. ff. 87-90. PS. that it is the ambassador's return to England which has brought him there
