Marquis de Prie to Marlborough: the treaty was signed on 15 January by Cardinal Paulucci for the pope [Clement XI] and de Prie for the emperor [Joseph I]. The pope [Clement XI]'s troops and garrisons will revert to the status quo. The pope [Clement XI] has recognized Charles III as king of Spain. Machinations of the French party at the papal court. He thinks he should ask Vice Admiral [Sir Edward] Whitaker to halt the bombardment of Civitavecchia. There will now be no difficulty in embarking the troops for Catalonia. Dated in Rome. ff. 311-314
