Description

Marlborough to Count Sinzendorff in Vienna: he has a packet of letters from the court of Barcelona addressed to the late M. de Quiros which he will read at The Hague. The successes in the low countries have obliged the enemy to withdraw troops from Spain and Roussillon, which makes it all the more necessary to act vigorously in Catalonia, and he feels sure the queen will agree with the emperor [Joseph I]'s plan to help King Charles [III]. He reminds him that the expenses for the first 3,000 men have already been met; the queen may look favourably on meeting them for the second 3,000, but there is to be no question of levy money, as Count Wratislaw knows. 53,000 ecus have been owed to Saxony for nearly three months. The importance of Prince Eugene having 20,000 men. The French are massing their forces, and the slightest setback would negate all previous successes. The importance of the army of the Rhine. Dated in Brussels. ff. 304-307
