Marlborough to Boyle: the queen has asked his opinion as to how the troops in the fleet may be most gainfully employed; he considers it too late in the season for them to be of use in Portugal. They should be paid directly by their own general, and not through the Portuguese. Since beginning the letter he has received another from the deputies of the states [general] [SP 87/3/85] suggesting a use for them if they are landed at Ostend, with which he agrees. The attack on the counterscarp [of Lille] was not as successful as hoped. An ammunition convoy for Lille threatened by the enemy. Dated at camp at Fretin. ff. 171-174
