Extract of a letter from the duke of Moles to Marlborough: the admirals will not let them have a squadron during winter despite the loss of Tortosa. They wish to go straight to Sardinia and then detach six ships to Naples to collect 4,000 infantry for Barcelona. The king [Charles III of Spain] has sent a colonel to Vienna to ask the emperor [Joseph I] for two regiments. He wishes Marlborough to give orders for the ships to winter in the Mediterranean. There is no shortage of provisions in Italy, as the admirals claim. Dated at Barcelona. ff. 169, 170
