Landgrave of Hesse to Marlborough: he cannot see why the queen should be surprised at his conditions, as they are founded on treaties and conventions. As regards the arrears for the last war, he is prepared to accept a payment of a third, followed by the remaining two-thirds within six months. His expenses in Italy make it impossible for him to wait until the end of the war. He accepts Marlborough's word on the position of the crown prince and his other officers in Prince Eugene's army. He accepts that England and the Netherlands will maintain his interests at any peace negotiations and points out that his army is now marching down the Rhine to the Moselle. Dated at Cassel. ff. 67, 68
