Description (What the record is about)
-
Extract from letter to Count Wratislaw from Marlborough of 17 May: he hopes the order has been given to embark the 4,000 imperial troops for Catalonia, as he expects the imminent arrival of Admiral Leake. According to what he has heard from Stanhope, their arrival would enable the Spanish king to take the offensive. He is writing to express Prince Eugene's just resentment at the scant regard of Vienna for honouring the terms of their treaty with him, for which England and the state[s general] are guarantors. He urges the necessity for the common cause of fulfilling these obligations without delay. The enemy has been obliged to put so many troops into the field on this front that Prince Eugene will have virtually a clear field. It is therefore essential that the 20,000 imperial troops be readied and put at his command. ff. 58, 58A
