Description

Marlborough to Harley: Young, Harley's messenger has arrived, and Marlborough has sent him on with letters to Turin. He encloses a copy [SP 87/2/308] of his letter to Sir Clowdisley Shovell, urging him to facilitate the project against France [attack on Toulon]. Having received requests for assistance from the elector Palatine, the elector of Mainz, the duke of Württemburg and the margrave of Bayreuth, he has in concert with the states [general] sent orders to the Saxon troops to march to Philippsburg. The elector of Mainz is to keep boats constantly ready should they need to return to Cologne. The emperor [Joseph I] is willing to send German troops to Spain after the expedition against Naples, provided England and the Netherlands pay. The elector of Hanover has declined command of the army in Germany. The French have proposed an exchange of prisoners, which Marlborough thinks they ought to delay. Some French successes in Portugal. He thinks the duke of Savoy and Prince Eugene are now in motion. Dated at camp at Meldert. PS. that he encloses letters from the elector of Mainz and the duke of Württemburg [SP 87/2/308] and his response to the latter [SP 87/2/309]. ff 627-631
