Description

Marlborough to Harley: he can say nothing more of the recognition of King Stanislaus but that The Hague and the court of Hanover are willing to gain time to see how the king of Sweden will behave towards Vienna. He understands from [Daniel] Pulteney [English envoy to the court of Denmark] that the affair of the renunciation [of the bishopric of Lübeck] hinges on the payment of the pension. He has received proposals [SP 87/2/297] from the elector Palatine, has written to Hanover for the elector's reaction, and asks for the queen's orders regarding the Saxon troops requested. He does not think the states [general] would be willing to release them, and believes that with a good general the Germans could drive the French back across the Rhine. Stepney has informed the landgrave of Hesse that he can expect no arrears until they are approved by parliament. He has seen a copy of Lord Galway's letter to Sir George Bing. [John] Chetwynd [ambassador at Turin] has sent him the results of the conferences at Turin between the duke of Savoy, Prince Eugene and our rear admiral, and encloses a copy of his reply [SP 87/2/298]. Dated at camp at Meldert. ff 608, 609
