Extract from the army's journal: Marlborough has sent Major General Ross to Bruges, Brigadier Cadogen to Antwerp and Brigadier Dewitz to Oudenaarde to demand allegiance to King Charles III [of Spain]. The garrison of Ghent has surrendered, as has Oudenaarde, the French being permitted to go to Courtrai and the Spanish to Mons. The French have left Bruges, where the magistrates have acknowledged King Charles. Marlborough has sent Cadogan authority to treat with the garrison at Antwerp. He has sent a detachment of cavalry to Dendermonde to call on the governor to acknowledge the king. Bridges have been laid across the Scheldt and Lys, and the army leaves next day for Deynse. The French have retired beyond Menin. Dated at camp at Meerlbeck. ff. 442, 443
