Marlborough to Harley: he hopes that Colonel Richards will soon be with Harley with news of the victory [Ramillies]. When preparing to force the Dyle he heard that the enemy had abandoned Louvain and were retiring on Brussels. He bridged the river and camped at Bethlem. Having received the enclosed letter [SP 87/2/213], he saw deputations from the states of Brabant, the sovereign council of Brabant and the burgomasters of the city of Brussels in the afternoon. He sent each of these a letter [SP 87/2/211] to enable them to assemble and declare for King Charles [III of Spain].Next day the three deputations declared for Charles [SP 87/2/212]. The magistrates of Mechelen and Aalst have also submitted. The enemy have abandoned Lier and moved their artillery and stores to Antwerp. Great numbers of prisoners of war and deserters. Dated at camp at Grimberg. PS. that the army in Portugal is besieging Ciudad Rodrigo and that Barcelona has probably been relieved. ff. 424-427
