Marlborough to the emperor [Joseph I]: he had hoped to have some good news, but he has failed to persuade the states [general] to attack on the Saar because of the continual complaints of Prince [Louis] of Baden. Marlborough had hoped to join Prince Eugene in Italy with 20,000 men, but the retreat of Prince Louis has ended that. He has obtained 10,000 men for Italy on condition that he remains [in the low countries], and will despatch them as soon as possible. He still hopes to come in person at the end of this campaign or the start of the next. He recommends Field Marshal Starhemberg to command the second army corps. He asks the emperor [Joseph I] to impress on the princes the importance of the upper Rhine. Dated at The Hague. ff. 405, 406
