Prince Louis of Baden to Marlborough: de Villars and de Marcin advanced on him with at least 50,000 men. Hagenau was not fortified for lack of money, men and tools. Account of his retreat to Drusenheim and Dalhunden before Villars. Absence of the contingents from Württemburg, Franconia, Würzburg and Darmstadt. It is the fourth time he has been abandoned to Villars. If the enemy occupies the lines of Hagenau they will be impossible to retake. Action against Alsace and Strasbourg will not be feasible for the rest of the war. The French attach the greatest importance to Hagenau and Fort Louis. A large part of the imperial troops in Italy have been defeated. Dated at Rastatt. ff. 403, 404
