Description

Extract from the resolutions of the states general of the united provinces: having heard the report of [Mijn]heer van Harreveld and others, the deputies for military affairs have examined the letter from [Mijn]heer van Buys and [Mijn]heer van Vryberghen, envoys to the queen of Great Britain, concerning the representations to be made to the princes supplying troops for the Dutch and British service for the maintenance of better order and discipline among these troops... Four articles concerning discipline and the chain of command. The Netherlands and Great Britain will recall any orders found to be in breach of the treaties. Where foreign troops are entitled by treaty to hold their own courts martial, the chief general of the combined army may enforce action on receipt of complaints. Foreign troops must administer justice according to the ordinances of the Netherlands... sentences are subject to the approval of the chief general. These resolutions are to be communicated to the kings of Denmark and Prussia, the elector Palatine, the elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, the duke of Holstein and the bishop of Münster. The same representations to be made by the military deputies and Stanhope to the ministers [of these powers at The Hague]. This extract to be sent to Heeren van Buys and van Vryberghen [in London], so that Great Britain may act in concert. ff. 373-376
