George Stepney to Sir William Trumbull [secretary of state]: Count Trizen will sail to England with Mr. Hespen, envoy of the duke of Württemberg, who will attempt to get from the king the subsidies which he gave Savoy. The French are assembling 80,000 troops for the Rhine, and Mainz and Coblenz need reinforcing. The states of the upper Rhine are raising troops independently of the landgrave. Lord Villiers and the [grand] pensionary are satisfied with Callières's proposal for acknowledging the king. Size and intentions of the French squadron at Brest.
