George Stepney to Sir William Trumbull [secretary of state]: speculation that the French are using the peace proposals solely to sow discord among the allies. Shortcomings of Mr. D[ickvelt]. More troops being raised by all parties and the expense this involves. Ways of getting information on shipping in French ports by using an Amsterdam banker or a Swiss or Swede. His expenses and financial difficulties. A ministry for him in the Brandenburg and Saxon courts would be blocked by Ham, a Dutchman and favourite of Lord P[ortlan]d. He wonders whether he might replace Lord Pagett in Turkey. Dated at The Hague. ff. 216-221
