'Magnus Ducatus Finlandiae'. Map of Finland (excluding Lapland) and parts of Sweden and Russia. The map shows the eastern border of Finland determined at the peace of Nystad in 1721. Also shows towns, rivers, canals, mountains, fortresses; islands and regions named. Place-names mainly in Swedish, but Finnish, German and Latin are also used. Title in cartouche with sheaves and trident. Scale: 1 cm to 8.8 miles (calculated from 1 degree = 7.8 cm). Originally enclosed with letter from E Finch to Lord Harrington, St Petersburg, 8 December 1741, where the map is described as good and recently printed. According to Finch, he had annotated the map to show troop movements and to identify particular places, but - unless this map is a duplicate - the annotations are not now visible.
