Administrative / biographical background

The Accountant General's Department (AGD) was formed as part of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, in the early 1950s.It consisted of three divisions: AGD1 was responsible for salaries and allowances, and for parliamentary estimates; AGD2 for housing grants and subsidies; and AGD3 for new towns finance, grants for derelict land and historic buildings, and superannuation and compensation of local government employees.

In 1970, the department became part of the new Department of the Environment. In 1972 AGD and LGR (Local Government) divisions merged to become the Finance (Local Government and the Development) Directorate (FLGD).
