HLG 97
1946-1987
This series contains files from the Rent Tribunals for Cornwall, Devon, East Lancashire and East Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire, London, Manchester and South Middlesex, relating to applications by landlords, tenants or local authorities for fixing reasonable rents and by tenants for extending the period of security of tenure granted under the Furnished Houses (Rent Control) Act 1946 and subsequent Acts. The Tribunals usually hold hearings and visit the premises under review before reaching their decision, which are then notified to the local authority in whose area the premises are situated. There is a right of appeal from the decision on points of law only.
The areas administered by each Tribunal roughly accorded with its descriptive title, but if its work load was fairly light it might well take over part of the area formerly administered by a neighbouring tribunal which had a heavy work load. Equally when a tribunal had a very heavy work load its work could split as mentioned or a new tribunal might be created for that part of the tribunal's area which had the heaviest work load.
