The Poor Law Officers' Superannuation Act 1896 first gave statutory powers for the setting up of schemes in Poor Law Unions. Some local authorities had previously set up superannuation schemes under local act powers. The Local Government and Other Officers' Superannuation Act 1922 enabled local authorities and combinations of local authorities to adopt the Act subject to the Minister's approval in order to establish superannuation schemes.
Since then legislation has been amended and modified under various subsequent Acts including:-
The Widow's Orphan's and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act 1925
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925
The Local Government Act 1929
The Local Government Superannuation Acts 1937 and 1939
The Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1948
The Local Government Superannuation Act 1953
The Local Government Act 1958
The Pensions (Increase) Act 1959
The National Insurance Act 1959
