This series comprises inward correspondence of the Admiralty Registry on a variety of administrative matters arising from its instance business, for the years 1853 to 1946. Much of the correspondence is from the Treasury, Admiralty and other government departments, and concerns such matters as accounts, appointments, statistics, etc. Copies of outward letters have been filed with later papers.
There are also registers of correspondence, indexed under subjects, etc, and showing the action taken, for the years 1856 to 1963.
The documents are arranged and catalogued chronologically, and the number under which each transaction was first registered is indicated in the catalogue.

Some of the papers in pieces 1-4 were destroyed in 1937, apparently under the terms of a Destruction Schedule of 3 May 1922, because they were not considered worthy of permanent preservation.
