The Merchants' Authorisation Committee was established under the Potato Marketing Scheme (Approval) Order (Great Britain) 1933. Its role was to monitor the licensing process for potato merchants so ensuring that potatoes were sold through approved outlets. Licensed merchants were accountable to the Potato Marketing Board for their financial probity, and general transactions.
During the Second World War the board's duties were taken over by the Ministry of Food who continued to operate a licensing system.
When the Potato Marketing Board was re-established in 1955, merchants registered with the Ministry of Food were automatically transferred to the re-named Licensing Committee.
