The Basic Acreage Committee was established by the Board in 1934, renamed Basic Area Committee in 1976 (in line with metrification), and is still in operation. It was suspended 1940-1954.
Basic acreage (later 'basic area') was the acreage for growing potatoes allocated to individual registered producers under the Potato Marketing Schemes 1933 and 1955 (SI 1933/1186 and 1955/690), as explained in Schedule D of the Schemes. Producers' voting powers and financial contributions to the Scheme were proportionate to their potato acreage. They might be penalised by heavily increased financial contributions for exceeding their basic acreage.
The Committee was responsible for administering the allocation of basic area to growers. This included monitoring applications for basic area from new growers, changes to individual holdings, and sale, transfer or lease of area. It advised the Board on basic area policy, determined powers delegated to staff, and heard appeals made by producers against the operation of the policy.
