Description

The files in this series were used by the Electrical Engineering Chemical (Process Plant) and Shipbuilding Industries Division (ECS) of the Ministry of Technology (Mintech) and its successors.

Files in the SB series relate to the shipbuilding industry, for which the ECS Division and then the DTI's Shipbuilding and Process Plant Division (SBP) Division had both technological and sponsorship responsibilities. Many of the earlier files cover financial rescue cases, including those of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders and Fairfields (Glasgow) Ltd. There is a series of minutes and papers of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Shipbuilding. A small number of these files relate to the UK hovercraft industry which the division had responsibility for sponsoring after 1974. There are also records relating to the competitive and financial position of British Shipbuilders and its privatisation, the shipbuilding redundancy payments scheme, the home shipbuilding credit gurantee scheme and the shipbuilding intervention scheme The Shipbuilding Industry Board (SIB), which the division oversaw during its lifetime, had its own file series.

The SB series also contains re-registrations from the Ministry of Transport's GSP series and DTI Hovercraft Division's AW series.

Arrangement
Arrangement

The SB file prefix originated in ECS Division, in 1967, following transfer of responsibility for the industry from the Board of Trade (BoT) to Mintech in autumn 1966. Both the Ministry of Transport and, prior to that, the Admiralty had previous responsibility for the subject. Mintech briefly maintained the BoT's SBR file prefix but then replaced it with the new SB prefix, falling into line with current Mintech practice; many of the existing files were renumbered accordingly.

Related material

There was some re-registration from the predecessor SBR file series, as well as from the Hovercraft Division's AW series and the Ministry of Transport's GSP series. Records in these file series can be found in: AVIA 98
