The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was formed October 1970 with the merger of the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Technology. In January 1974, the department's responsibilities for energy production were transferred to a newly created Department of Energy and in March, the DTI was split into the Department of Trade, the Department of Industry and the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection. The departments of Trade and Industry were reunited in 1983 and in 1992 the Department of Energy was re-merged back into the DTI and continued to set the energy policy for the UK until the DTI was superseded by the creation of the Department for Business, Enterprise, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills in June 2007. It is assumed that these files were inherited by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), formerly the Central Statistical Office and the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS), because of the former?s interest in statistics, business and industry.
