These files concern the administration of and allocation of resources to government research establishments which were the responsibility of the Ministry of Technology and subsequently of the Department of Trade and Industry including their location, consideration of a customer/contractor relationship approach to research and development, conversion to research associations and privatisation. They include files relating to the ministry's role in research on oil pollution and to the formation of Research Requirements Boards.

Arrangement
The SN registry was established in the RA Division in 1967 or 1968. However many A series files, generated by the Research Stations registry of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, continued in use in the Mintech until early 1968. Many A series files were re-registered in the SN series. On the demise of Mintech in late 1970, the SN series continued in use in the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and then in the Department of Industry until the re-establishment in 1983 of a Department of Trade and Industry, where the series is still current.
