This series comprises the master set of 'key' or reference sheets for potential national nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest in England and Wales
The sheets represent an attempt, begun circa 1955, to collate information on prime sites for purposes of identification and protection.
The sheets list references to each site in date order. Principal sources are lists compiled by N C Rothschild for the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves (1913); the report of the Nature Reserves Investigation Committee (1945); the Report of the Wildlife Conservation Special Committee, England and Wales (Huxley Committee, Cmd 7122, 1947); memoranda of the Nature Conservancy and its England and Wales Committee (1949-1953); individual surveys and records of visits by Conservancy staff; and correspondence, particularly between the Conservancy and local planning authorities. The sheets represent a digest of opinion on the value of each site.
On average there is one sheet per site, arranged alphabetically by site name. The sheets were placed in files for purposes of transfer to the PRO.
