Administrative / biographical background

The Nature Conservancy Council was a government agency responsible for designating and managing National Nature Reserves and other nature conservation areas in Great Britain between 1973 and 1991. Nature Conservancy's main committee and sub-committees and major working groups include the Nature Conservancy; Scottish Committee; England and Wales Committee; Scientific Policy Committee; Advisory Committee for England; Advisory Committee for Wales; Conservation Group; and others. In 1991, following the passage of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Natural Heritage (Scotland) Act 1991, the Nature Conservancy Council was divided into three. The section of the agency covering England became English Nature.
