Certification from the Registrar of Friendly Societies was an official recognition of the operative status of a trade union, under the terms of the Trade Union Act 1913. The Trade Union Act 1913 also permitted trade unions to raise funds for political purposes, but not to compel all its members to contribute to such funds.
