Administrative / biographical background

The London and South Eastern Regional Office was one of the eight English Regional Offices that became the responsibility of the Department of Industry, upon the separation of the joint Department of Trade and Industry in 1974, having been part of the regional office network established under the Board of Trade in 1945.

Offices were under the direction of Regional Controllers. Each was responsible for providing intelligence on all matters concerning the Board of Trade, in their particular region. The Controllers became part of the Ministry of Technology in 1969, but remained responsible to the Board of Trade for export services. In 1971 they became responsible to the Department of Trade and Industry which initially appointed separate regional directors for industry and for export services, but later merged the two services.

The London and South Eastern Regional Office had the task of representing its parent Department in its dealings with industry, local authorities, the regional offices of other government departments and other local bodies and organisation within the region. It also undertook specific functions on behalf of HQ Divisions in the fields of regional industrial development, export promotion, the encouragement of industrial efficiency and improved technology, and in dealing with civil contingencies and emergencies.

In December 1979, the London and South Eastern Regional Office merged with the Eastern Regional Office to form a new South Eastern Regional Office.
