This series reflects the work of the civilian UK High Commissioner for Germany. The files cover various aspects of British relations with the Federal Republic of Germany during the final phase of Allied control, including much on European and German unity and on internal German politics. Following West Germany's achievement of full independence in 1955 normal diplomatic relations were resumed.
For later embassy and consular files see FO 1042
After the establishment of the West German government and an Allied High Commission of the three Western powers in 1949 the British military governor became UK high commissioner and his chief administrative officer was re-styled chief of staff. When West Germany became independent in 1955 the Office of the UK High Commissioner became an embassy.
