A protest was made on 9 May 1636 to Thomas Watkins, notary public of Dover, Kent, by Francis Haworth, also notary public of Dover, against John Holt, Andrew Davys, Edward Burges, Briant Middleton, Thomas Smyth, Edward Dale, James Lucy, Thomas Shotten, Edmond Weekes, Emanuel Rogers, Josias Wilkinson, James Symes, John Clarke, Roger Russell, John Jones, Phillip Pritchards, Thomas Ayres and Constantine Woodroff, company of the White Lion of which Thomas Middleton was the master, having arrived laden with salt from the Isle of 'May' in the dominions of the king of Spain, for refusing to proceed with their voyage to Ostend, according to their contract with John Therry, merchant of London. Watkins went aboard the ship, called the crew together, read them the protest and entered the complaint into the High Court of Admiralty in London before Sir Henry Martin. Watkins protests 'by these presents' against the actions of the crew. (f. 79)
