Thomas Middleton of London, mariner, master of the White Lion, lately come from the Isle of 'May' within the dominions of the king of Spain, appeared before Francis Haworth, notary public of Dover, Kent, and made known that John Holt, Andrew Davis, Edward Burges, Briant Middleton, Thomas Smith, Edward Dale, James Lucey, Thomas Shotten, Edmund Weekes, Manwell Rogers, Josias Wilkinson, Samuel Symes, John Clarke, Roger Russell, John Jones, Phillip Richards, Thomas Ayres and Constine Woodruffe were all hired to sail the same ship to such ports as John Terrey, merchant of London, should direct. The said merchant had directed the master and company to sail from Dover to Ostend. The master entreated the notary to speak with them, to which they answered that they would undertake the journey if given a security for payment, otherwise keep possession of the ship. The master is protesting 'by these presents' against the above-named and intends to recover what they have been paid (f. 79)
