These papers are official government records of Eden's Private Office when he was Foreign Secretary. This set of records included some personal or party political papers not created in this capacity. Photocopies of those papers were not accessioned by the Public Record Office and the originals were returned to Lord Avon. However, the existence of these papers is noted in the catalogue to account for what would otherwise be gaps in the foliation.
Anthony Eden served as a Conservative Member of Parliament between 1923 and 1957. He was Foreign Secretary during 1935-1938, 1940-1945 and 1951-1955, and Prime Minister during 1955-1957. He was made 1st Earl of Avon in 1961.
