There are two separate collections in this series: the papers of Sir Edward Thornton, diplomatist (1766-1852), consisting very largely of archives of various embassies and consulates to which he was posted during his official career, principally those in Hamburg and Hanse Towns, Sweden and Portugal; and those of his son Sir Edward Thornton, diplomatist (1817-1906), consisting mainly of copies of official correspondence relating to his various embassies, chiefly those in the USA and Russia, and private correspondence relating to official matters.
