PAPERS OF ROBERT, EARL OF HOLLAND
Description

Household accounts, bills and receipts of Robert Rich, Earl Holland (succeeded 1649) and Earl of Warwick (1673) and his second wife, Anne, daughter of Edward Montagu, Earl of Manchester, continuing into the widowhood of Anne (d 1689) after his death in 1675. They do not include records of the lands formerly appertaining to the earldom of Warwick, since most of the estates of that earldom passed to the daughters of the fourth earl, Robert's cousin, save only for Warwick House in Holborn(Complete Peerage, xii pt 2, 415-416). The fifth earl's other titles included the barony of Kensington; and estate papers among the collection refer to property in Earl's Court, Kensington, Smithfield (where properties included lands formerly belonging to St Bartholomew the Great), and other places.

The collection consists largely of subsidiary documents both for the household and concerning the estate. The latter include leases, contracts, and papers concerning building, and rentals and receipts, including papers concerning taxes and other assessments.

Household bills include payments for cloths and medicines. There is a memorandum relating to proposed alterations to the Holland burial vaults; and an account for the funeral of Robert's first wife, Elizabeth, in 1661. Some papers go back into the sixteenth century; and they extend into the minority of Robert's son, Edward, including cause papers and other documents in a number of law suits brought on his behalf. Like other collections in this series, the papers include a number of apparently unrelated strays including, in this instance, a pricked list of sheriffs under the King's sign manual, with manuscript additions to the original nominations, 28 Charles II.
