Description

Folios 3-10. [Newcastle] from Kensington to Townshend. Acknowledges his lordship's letters of the 6th. instant N.S. Her Majesty was very glad to find by them that the affair of Prussia is in so fair a way of being amicably accommodated and to see that the King had approved to the orders which has been sent to the plenipotentiaries in France. Her Majesty commanded that the orders for Mr. Stanhope to go to Spain should be turned into an instruction in form which has been signed by her Majesty and transmitted to him. A copy is enclosed. The following are also enclosed: Copy of a letter from Lord Tyrawley with one from him to Mons. Mendonca and another from Mons. Mendonca to him and the memorial that Mons. Galvao presented yesterday to the Queen. In order to put as speedy an end as is possible to this unhappy dispute with Portugal, the Queen has ordered letters to be written to Mons. Galvao and Lord Tyrawley, that if the King of Portugal will take off the embargo from his Majesty's ship, the damage suffered by the Portuguese merchants shall be paid immediately and that Captain Norris shall be tried according to the forms and customs of his Majesty's navy, upon whatever complaint it shall be thought proper to make against him. Copies of these letters will be sent to his lordship when written and to Lord Chesterfield to be communicated to Don Lais De Cunha, who, her Majesty is persuaded, will employ his good offices at his court to bring this matter to a happy conclusion. P.S. Acknowledges his lordship's letter of the 9th. instant N.S. with the news of his Majesty's intention speedily to come back to England and that the affair of Prussia is happliy ended. Foul draft and extract.
